Your assistance please...
editHi!
I saw you removed Category:Skylines of Seattle from a bunch of files. When you removed that category were you aware of the steps I took to initiate a discussion over renaming Category:Seattle skylines to Category:Skylines of Seattle?
If so, was there a reason why you didn't weigh in with an opinion as to why that renaming shouldn't take place?
Some of my correspondents can be really unpleasant with demands that categories be renamed, in order to "be consistent with other cats". Most cities have a Category:Skylines of Foo or a Category:Skyline of Foo not a Category:Foo skylines. I don't care which name we choose as the parent name, so long as the other name redirects to the basename. I had to waste time searching for the right category name.
The {{Move}} template I chose sounds like it is the simplest way to initiate a renaming, that preserves the original revision history in the right place.
If you didn't have any actual objections to the name itself, and your only objection was that they were red-links, can I assume you have no objection to restoring that category? Alternately, if you do have an objection, could you state it at Category talk:Seattle skylines? Geo Swan (talk) 11:47, 1 October 2014 (UTC)

MLS
editHello there. You wrote on my talk page saying that File:MLS logo (2014).png is up for deletion as you have uploaded a vector version found in this PDF. I have no objections to the deletion, though I ask a small favour: could you also upload the LAFC, Atlanta 2017 and MLS 20th season emblems on the same PDF too? I'd do it myself but I'm never sure on SVG uploads here and since you seem to know your stuff, I figured I'd ask. Cheers, Malpass93 (talk) 13:31, 31 March 2015 (UTC)
- @Malpass93: I'll upload them as soon as I'm not confined to a mobile device. Thanks for pointing that out for me. SounderBruce 17:39, 31 March 2015 (UTC)
You're right, I didn't check closely for the image being Flickr-washed. Thanks for catching that. Conifer (talk) 03:08, 27 May 2015 (UTC)
Welcome, Dear Filemover!
edit
Hi SounderBruce, you're now a filemover. When moving files please respect the following advice:
- Use the CommonsDelinker link in the {{Rename}} template to order a bot to replace all ocurrences of the old title with the new one. Or, if there was no rename-request, please use the Move & Replace-tab.
- Please leave a redirect behind unless you have a valid reason not to do so. Other projects, including those using InstantCommons, might be using the file even though they don't show up in the global usage. Deleting the redirects would break their file references. Please see this section of the file rename guideline for more information.
- Please know and follow the file rename guidelines.
- Stay green! --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 07:03, 3 August 2015 (UTC)
Capitol Hill Station & permissions
editYou recently updated a bunch of photos such as File:Photo by Don Wilson Capitol Hill Station 2016 (25161940723).jpg that say in their description "To request permission to use this photo, contact Darrius Wells at Darrius.wells@soundtransit.org or 206.689.3381". That seems to sit oddly with a CC-By-2.0 license, though I guess it could relate to using the image in manners incompatible with that license. Still, it seems like putting these on Commons may go against the photographer's (ill-expressed) intent. Can you follow up on this (probably make the contact)? Thanks. - Jmabel ! talk 00:19, 14 May 2016 (UTC)
- @Jmabel: Looks like an error on my part (in letting the automated tool run pretty much unimpeded) and on Sound Transit's (if they indeed did not want these images CC-BY-2.0). Not all of the photos on the Special Collections account are licensed as CC-BY-2.0 (quite a few non-commercial and All rights reserved licenses), so it may be intended as open use. I've notified the listed e-mail offering guidance. (Though I really hope we can keep a few of the photos, especially the portraits and construction pictures; most everything else is replaceable). SounderBruce 01:47, 14 May 2016 (UTC)
- Thanks, Bruce. They're good photos, I hope we get to keep some. - Jmabel ! talk 15:39, 14 May 2016 (UTC)
Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2015 is open!
editYou are receiving this message because you voted in R1 of the 2015 Picture of the Year contest.
Dear SounderBruce,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2015 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the tenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2015) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. In Round 1, there were 1322 candidate images. There are 56 finalists in Round 2, comprised of the top 30 overall as well as the top #1 and #2 from each sub-category. In the final round, you may vote for just one or maximal three image to become the Picture of the Year.
Round 2 will end on 28 May 2016, 23:59:59 UTC.
Thanks,
-- Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee 09:43, 22 May 2016 (UTC)

Sounder commuter rail categorization
editJust a heads up: I've created Category:Sounder commuter rail trains, as I've been doing for several other commuter rail systems (MBTA and VRE among them). All images of Sounder trains in revenue service should be categorized in there (as well as the appropriate rolling stock and station categories). This allows one-stop shopping for images of Sounder trains, but keeps Category:Sounder commuter rail as an uncrowded top-level category. Thanks once again for all the hard work you've done in finding good images of Sounder! Cheers, Pi.1415926535 (talk) 16:28, 8 May 2017 (UTC)
Your VFC installation method is deprecated
editHello SounderBruce, we are aware that using the old installation method of VFC (via common.js, which you are using) may not work reliably anymore and can break other scripts as well. A detailed explanation can be found here. Important: To prevent problems please remove the old VFC installation code from your common.js and instead enable the VFC gadget in your preferences. to your userpage!Thank you for contributing to Wiki Loves Monuments 2017 in the United States during the month of October! The United States contest saw over 1,400 people (the most of any nation this year) contribute over 8,000 great photos of cultural and historic sites from all over the United States and its territories. Hundreds of these photos are already being used to illustrate pages on various Wikimedia projects.
We're excited to announce that our national judging process has concluded, and that we have selected the winners of Wiki Loves Monuments 2017 in the United States! These photos are recognized for their photographic quality, artistic merit, and their encyclopedic value as illustrations of unique historical sites. We were amazed by all of the uploads, and regret only being able to formally recognize the top 10. That being said – congratulations to our national winners and their amazing shots! Our 10 winners will be sent to the international Wiki Loves Monuments jury, who will then select the winners of the international contest. If you're interested in seeing the winners of the other national contests, you may do so at Wiki Loves Monuments 2017 winners.
If you would like to view all the photos submitted for the U.S. this year, you may do so here.
Finally, we have also created a feedback form for all U.S. participants to fill out. The survey is optional and anonymous, and only takes a minute or two – we hope to use the feedback to organize better events in the future!
A quick thank you to our national jury, as well as Commons editors who have helped categorize and place photos for the event. And finally, thank you for participating in Wiki Loves Monuments and helping to preserve our history through photography - we hope to see you again for future Commons photography events!

Thanks for uploading File:East Link alignments in Bellevue, 2010.png. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |

to your userpage!Hello! Last year you contributed to Wiki Loves Monuments 2017 in the United States. Thanks to people like you it was a great success, with over 1,400 people contributing over 8,000 photos of cultural and historic sites from all over the country. Hundreds of these photos now help illustrate Wikipedia articles, improving our open knowledge about United States history, culture, and heritage.
I'm pleased to say that we're back this year with Wiki Loves Monuments 2018 in the United States, and I'd like to welcome you to participate once again in the event. Check out our updated event page for more information. The event runs similar to last year with some small but exciting changes: improved state guides, an interactive map, and a larger prize pool! Like last year, you'll be able to upload your photos of any registered historical site in the United States through the end of September (even if the photos were taken before this month).
Once again, thank you for participating in Wiki Loves Monuments 2017, and we hope to see you again in this year's event! If you'd like to respond to this message directly, please do so on on my talk page. ~Kevin Payravi (talk) 11:46, 11 September 2018 (UTC)
Help requested
editAs you know, I'm constantly diffusing the thousands of images dumped into Category:Seattle. Right now there are at least 50, probably 100, transit-related images in there (among many others). Do you think you could help categorize these? Thanks in advance. - Jmabel ! talk 18:00, 25 September 2019 (UTC)
- @Jmabel: I'll look into it over the weekend. Is there a script or semi-automated tool to batch categorize or sort out recently-uploaded stuff? SounderBruce 21:33, 25 September 2019 (UTC)
- Thanks. No such script as far as I know, and they are not recently uploaded: someone just slapped Category:Seattle on a ton of stuff, much of which I'm finding is not even in city limits. It will be pretty obvious which photos are in question because this will be a large percentage of the color photographs in that category: the bulk of the category is century-old black-and-white photos that I'm carefully working through, often making a lot of corrections to descriptions. - Jmabel ! talk 21:39, 25 September 2019 (UTC)
- One that I took a shot at (so it's no longer in Category:Seattle) but where it won't surprise me if you can come up with some better categories: File:Fence (4440466724).jpg. - Jmabel ! talk 00:00, 26 September 2019 (UTC)
- I've knocked a couple of hundred photos from Category:Seattle in the last day or so. From what I've now seen, I'd guess that there are actually over 100 that are transit-related in what remains, it depends how broadly you define transit. - Jmabel ! talk 05:13, 27 September 2019 (UTC)
- @Jmabel: I see that they are all from a single Flickr account, which was previously raided for photos by transit-knowledgeable users. Most of these recent uploads seem to be older images or those adjudged to be inappropriate by previous harvesters. SounderBruce 05:18, 27 September 2019 (UTC)
- Well that's a pity. A good number of the other uploads were not from the Atomic Taco account. (Plus there were a bunch of quite worthwhile photos from that account on other topics.) Anyway, unless you think there is a case for deleting them, they need to be categorized, and since Stefan Kühn chose to stuff them all in Category:Seattle (and nothing else) they become I problem I at least would like to solve. If you want, I can just move them to some sort of maintenance category (like a Category:Transit-related Seattle photos to be categorized) or I can do a doubtless less knowledgeable categorization than you would, but I really don't like them clogging up Category:Seattle. - Jmabel ! talk 05:29, 27 September 2019 (UTC)

Important message for file movers
editA community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect
user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.
Possible acceptable uses of this ability:
- To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
- To perform file name swaps.
- When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)
Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.
The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect
user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:36, 7 November 2019 (UTC)

- @Jmabel: I probably added that category because the museum shares a common "campus" with Union Station, though it was not built over any real station infrastructure (only a parking lot as far as the aerials show). SounderBruce 23:52, 17 April 2023 (UTC)
- Any objection if I remove it? Judging by some recent edits by someone else (who I'd rather not call out) I think it is leading to more confusion than clarity. - Jmabel ! talk 00:31, 18 April 2023 (UTC)
- @Jmabel: I don't mind. SounderBruce 00:39, 18 April 2023 (UTC)

How do I rename my files?
editI uploaded a lot of files most of which are badly named of Tsubaki Grand Shrine of America. Thank you for renaming the frogs one. Immanuelle ❤️💚💙 (please tag me) 03:38, 24 June 2023 (UTC)
- @Immanuelle: Please be more careful when naming files in the future. To request moves, use {{Move}}. SounderBruce 03:42, 24 June 2023 (UTC)
- @Immanuelle and SounderBruce: I believe {{Move}} is intended for categories, and Immanuelle will want {{Rename}}. - Jmabel ! talk 16:50, 24 June 2023 (UTC)
Logos associated with bus transport in Canada revert
edit2 things
1. I'm kind of in the middle of transferring images in the vague "associated" categories to more specific ones. In this case the logos "associated with bus transport" are really for public transport companies that utilize buses as the method of transport. They aren't "associated with" bus transport though. Otherwise I'd be interested to know what companies are "associated with" bus transport but aren't just transport companies that use buses. I think the fact that all the logos you added to the category are for exactly that shows there aren't any companies "associated with" bus transport, just ones that are bus transport companies. So if that's the case just create a category for that instead of making one with the useless word "associated with" when the images files being put in the category aren't actually "associated with" bus transport.
2. If you look at the origin category for this one Category:Logos by association the parent category is Category:Categories by association which is a part of Category:Clubs and societies. So the category scheme is suppose to be for "clubs and societies" of which associations are an off-shot of, but obviously transport companies aren't. The point in the category scheme isn't to be a general dump for things that are slighted related to each other though. It's for a specific type of organization that is an off-shot of clubs or societies. So there can be a lot of potential images for the category, but the category structure in general is still not for logos of normal companies that aren't clubs or societies. Let alone logos of things that are just "associated with" each other conceptually but aren't either one of those. You'd have to agree that a transport company isn't a club or society. So there's zero to have the category regardless of it's potential. And personally I could really care less what "potential" it has, I care if the category makes sense and follows the purpose of the category structure in the first place, which this one clearly doesn't. So I'd appreciate it if you reverted your edit and created a more descriptive category for logos of bus transport companies. Maybe Category:Logos of bus transport companies. I could really care less as long as it's not this category. Thanks. Adamant1 (talk) 18:31, 8 July 2023 (UTC)
- BTW, there's already Category:Logos of bus operators in Canada, which is literally the same exact thing. So why not just use that? --Adamant1 (talk) 18:33, 8 July 2023 (UTC)
- Never mind. I just did it myself. Your going to remove the speedy deletion then I'd appreciate it if you followed proper procedure and justified how you think they are different categories either here or on the talk page of the category before doing so. Thanks. --Adamant1 (talk) 18:37, 8 July 2023 (UTC)
New map request for the metropolitan Seattle Link light rail
editHello.
Can you create a whole geographical network map for the metropolitan Seattle Link light rail? There is none in Wikimedia Commons and which needs to exist for the Link light rail articles across Wikipedia. Can you use your detailed map of Line 2 File:East Link map with stations.png, as the basis for the new expanded map and fuse it with File:Link light rail, route map.png? Line 2 is scheduled to open in 2024 (or 2025) and Line 1 is also scheduled to expand in 2024 (or 2025). The lines that are under construction, should be shown dashed, and should be able to be edited on, when they open to service. Actually, a comprehensive network map is required in Wikimedia Commons and for the Wikipedia articles about them, and not just for individual lines.

- @Multituberculata: The interactive map works best for a system that will be undergoing many changes in a short period of time. I do not have time to create a complicated SVG map of the system, and there are others who are better suited to that work. Moreover, I did not appreciate being edit warred over such a trivial issue on en-wiki, so please do not contact me with any further requests. SounderBruce 08:26, 3 January 2024 (UTC)
- I will then put a request to Commons:Graphic Lab/Map workshop for a new map. I put a request for an update of the obsolete geographical network map for Washington Metro; a new map was created instead a few days ago. Please feel free to put your input. - I have put a request for a new comprehensive map for Seattle Light link rail in Commons:Graphic Lab/Map workshop. Please add your recommendations and other input. Multituberculata (talk) 08:36, 7 January 2024 (UTC)
- The map has been created. If you agree with this map, I will add "section resolved". Multituberculata (talk) 23:00, 19 January 2024 (UTC)
- (talk page stalker) @Multituberculata: care to link the map that you are asking whether people agree with? - Jmabel ! talk 03:47, 20 January 2024 (UTC)
