Files you uploaded may be deleted
[edit]The files listed below, which you uploaded, have been tagged {{OTRS pending}} for more than 30 days. This tag indicates that an email setting out permission to use the file was sent to the OTRS team. Unfortunately, we cannot find any record that such an email has been received, and accordingly the file remains without permission. Unless the OTRS team receives evidence that permission has been granted within 15 days of today’s date, the file will be deleted. If you have already sent the permission, please re-send it to "permissions-commonswikimedia.org" now. Please quote the file name in your email. At the same time, please leave a message at the OTRS noticeboard so that a volunteer can follow this up. Alternatively, you can contact an OTRS volunteer directly. Please note that this message is being left by an automated bot, whose operator is not an OTRS volunteer, therefore please do not send this information to me, as it will not save your images from deletion. Thanks for your time! Please help translate this message! HersfoldOTRSBot(talk/opt out) 01:00, 21 March 2010 (UTC)
Commercial packaging
[edit]It has to do with Commons:Derivative works and the "copyrightability" of the original packaging. If a given packaging has a simple design with a text logo, it cannot be copyrighted, so it is OK to make photos (derivative work) of it, even without permission. If it has complex designs (such as the ones you are pointing to), the packaging can be copyrighted, and it will be copyrighted unless otherwise expressed by its author(s). Copyrighted material can be uploaded here only if we get a proper permission or the copyright owner publishes it under a free enough license.
The argument "there are other similar images over here" cannot be accepted: maybe those images are not so similar (simple "uncopyrightable" designs vs. complex copyrighted ones), or maybe those images are also affected by the same problem and should be deleted too. Regards. --Dodo (talk) 07:40, 21 May 2010 (UTC)
- I know that the argument "there are other similar images over here" cannot be accepted to prevent deletion; I meant to state that as merely an observation and to ask a question. Thanks for your explanation. ~Kevin Payravi (Talk) 10:29, 21 May 2010 (UTC)
Hi Kevin,
I noticed that your custom template prevents the new buttons (Download, Use this file, Use this file, Email, Information) to appear. A change like this allows them to appear, but make us loose the special design of the custom template. Not sure what to think of it. -- Docu at 10:43, 12 March 2011 (UTC)
- I see, thanks for pointing that out. The reason why I made the custom template was that I never really liked the standard Information template (though I confess, my custom template isn't anything to gaze at, either). If my custom template prevents the new buttons from appearing, though, I'd be fine with converting all my files’ descriptions to the standard Information template. I'll try to get that done sometime today. Thanks, ~Kevin Payravi (Talk) 16:49, 12 March 2011 (UTC)

Beiqi_Foton_Motor_logo.png
[edit]Hello Kevin, the file that I uploaded doesn't have any copyright violation. I work for Foton Motor and my boss gave me the logo to update the one on Wikipedia. Which kind of document will be necessary to certificate this? Thank you. Shan (talk)
- Hi Shan – please take a look at the various tips and notices placed on your talk page. While your boss may have given you the file the upload to the Commons, it most likely does not meet the licensing requirements here on the Commons. Files uploaded here are required to be free – by uploading the file under the CC-BY-SA file you did, you are giving everyone the right to use the logo, for any reason (including commercial), with the only requirement to attribute the creator of the file. Rarely are company logos licensed in such a way, as companies usually want to hold the fully copyright to their own logos.
- If you are sure that your company would like to license their logo under the free license you chose, you'll need to send the permission to the Commons using our OTRS. This acts as a record that the file is licensed correctly.
- Most likely, though, your company still wishes to retain full copyright of their logo. The best option, then, will be to upload the file to Wikipedia itself under the claim of fair use, not the Commons. The English Wikipedia is able to host non-free files in specific cases where non-free equivalents cannot exist, such as company logos, movie scenes, etc.
- If you have any questions or need clarification, feel free to ask. Thanks, ~Kevin Payravi (Talk) 20:04, 24 December 2013 (UTC)
Question
[edit]Hi Kevin
I am putting a training Manual regarding Manual Handling together and would like to use your image. However I do not understand the commons thing at all and I have repeatedly read it. Therefore sorry for being so cheeky but would you let me know what to re the attribution.
Many Thanks Debbie — Preceding unsigned comment added by Debbie harry (talk • contribs) 20:27, 8 February 2014 (UTC) (UTC)
- Hi @Debbie harry: All images on the Commons have (or should have) their licensing information available on their file page. I license my images under the CC-BY-SA 3.0 license, which basically means you can use my images freely, as long as you release the image under the same (or similar) license, and attribute me. If you could attribute my image as "Kevin Payravi, Wikimedia Commons (CC-BY-SA 3.0)", that'd be fine with me! It doesn't matter to me where you place it -you could place the attribution in the image in vicinity of the image, or in a designated credits section elsewhere. Hope this clears things up! ~Kevin Payravi (Talk) 22:13, 8 February 2014 (UTC)
File tagging File:Darwin Falls long exposure.jpg
[edit]This media was probably deleted.
|
Thanks for uploading File:Darwin Falls long exposure.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded ([[:File:Darwin Falls long exposure.jpg]] ) and the above demanded information in your request. |

- @France91100: Hi there, and sorry for the wait in getting my response! The messages I left on your talk page explain the reason behind the files’ deletion. The Wikimedia Commons is a repository of freely licensed media that anyone can be use, for any purpose. Assumingly, the logo you uploaded is copyrighted (if not, we need proof that it is freely licensed). I suggest checking out the links in my messages on your talk page for further info. File:Butterball Turkey Bacon Package.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.
If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues. |

What exactly is wrong with this? The user left a CC sign thing on bottom right Tetra quark (talk) 12:22, 26 January 2015 (UTC)
- @Tetra quark: Well, the first problem is that you tagged the image as being in the public domain (CC0) instead of the correct license.
- Here is the list of the six CC licenses (not including CC0). Works on the Wikimedia Commons need to be available for commercial use; as a result, three of the six CC licenses available cannot be used on the Commons. The work you uploaded didn't allow for commercial use. If you have any questions, let me know! Thanks, ~Kevin Payravi (talk) 20:14, 26 January 2015 (UTC)

- @Tetra quark: Sure, that'd be perfectly fine (as long as the image itself is also clearly updated as being under the new license). ~Kevin Payravi (talk) 02:19, 27 January 2015 (UTC)

[edit]why was my entire page user/tetrahydrate deleted⁇⁇⁇?
- Hi @Tetrahydrate: Your user page wasn't deleted; it’s viewable at the English Wikipedia. You're on the Wikimedia Commons right now, and userpages are not shared between Wikipedia and the Commons. The only things that were deleted were the screenshots from Undertale, since they were screenshots of a copyrighted video game. You incorrectly deleted two of my images
[edit]You might have wanted to reach out before deleting two of my images related to Pokemon Go. I am an editor with about 30 years of experience in media. Those images (which I created myself using a tool Nintendo created for that purpose) didn't even come close to violating copyrights. Similar images have been used in news stories around the world in the past week. --Jdmdetroit1 (talk) 13:40, 15 July 2016 (UTC)
- Hi @Jdmdetroit1: Thanks for contacting me. The issue here is copyright; Nintendo et al. own the copyright to the Pokemon visual in your image. Even if Nintendo provides a way to take a screenshot of the game and share it, that doesn't mean that they are granting you the copyright over their artwork, nor are they granting you the right to share the work under a free license here on the Commons. Taking a screenshot of a copyrighted work counts as a derivative work, and is subject to the copyrights of the original work. Journalists frequently use copyrighted images (including Pokemon Go screenshots) either through some kind of press agreement, and/or under a claim of fair use. ~Kevin Payravi (talk) 14:02, 15 July 2016 (UTC)
The use of those images was fair use by any standard. The image was included inside an original image created by me. If I took a photo of a building and that building had a corporate logo on it, would it be deleted from Wikimedia as a copyright violation? Of course not. Earlier, I uploaded a photo of a bicycle. That bicycle is marked with copyrighted logos of its manufacturer. Was that a violation? Again, of course not. The same principle applies here.
I can guarantee you that no journalist using screenshots of Pokemon in the "augmented real world" are first contacting Nintendo for permission to do so. How can I say that? Because I have nearly 30 years’ experience working in newsrooms and I have dealt with issues like this before. With all due respect, your profile identifies you as a 19-year-old computer science student. It doesn't mention any newsroom experience at all. So, when you talk about what "journalists frequently" do, you are really just making a guess based on nothing. When I tell you what journalists do, it’s based on direct experience that dates to a period before you were born. --Jdmdetroit1 (talk) 14:15, 15 July 2016 (UTC)jdmdetroit1
- @Jdmdetroit1: There is a fundamental misunderstanding on the purpose of the Commons. The Commons serves as a repository of freely licensed images and other media; in other words, we host images that have been licensed in a way that lets anyone use the image for nearly any purpose. As a result, we don't host non-free images, which leads to the point that we don't host media under a claim of fair use. Most (not all) Wikipedia projects do let you upload photos under a claim of fair use, for the purpose of illustrating a subject like Pokemon Go. The Commons doesn't exist to serve that purpose, however.
- The point you bring up about taking a photo of a building with a corporate logo is a good one – except in those images, de minimis is a valid argument. In this case, I'd wager that the Pokemon was the image’s focus, main purpose, and proportionally a large part of the image.
- I appreciate your expertise in journalism (not so much your dismissal of my argument based on my age), but we're on the Commons, which has its own purpose and set of policies that I am trying to inform you of. I never said journalists are contacting Nintendo first, and I completely agree that no journalist is doing so. Notice the and/or that I mentioned regarding journalists using images, and note that I was not referring solely to Nintendo in this case. (and not that it matters, but I'm 21 – thanks for reminding me to update my age). ~Kevin Payravi (talk) 14:24, 15 July 2016 (UTC)
I am sorry that you don't understand that decades of direct experience actually means something and that you apparently think that someone with zero experience in a field can claim to be an expert just because they want to.
I posted those images because I knew that bloggers and small publications were writing about Pokemon GO, but there were no really pertinent images on Wikimedia Commons related to this important cultural phenomenon. So, I generated two images that show what the gameplay looks like. Editorially, they tell something about the story. And because they were intended for editorial and non-commercial use, they do not violate anybody’s copyright. If everybody interpreted copyright law the way you do, a whole lot of journalism would be shut down. Again, I can guarantee that, when news organizations around the world used and distributed photos like this from the NY Times: https://static01.nyt.com/images/2016/07/12/insider/12-Insider-Pokemon-Photo/12-Insider-Pokemon-Photo-master675.jpg, they didn't send a letter to Nintendo asking for permission.
By denying a right to post images like the ones I have posted, you are forcing bloggers and others to pay for very similar images created by organizations that did not get any more permission than I did.
I really think decisions like this should be made by experienced people with at least some first-hand knowledge of journalism. --Jdmdetroit1 (talk) 14:51, 15 July 2016 (UTC)jdmdetroit1
- @Jdmdetroit1: You mention that the images are "intended for editorial and non-commercial use". This is the point I'm trying to drive at: the Commons only hosts free images that allow anyone to use the image for nearly any purpose, including commercial use. I understand fair use, and I know that any journalist using a screenshot of Pokemon Go in a news article is doing so under a valid claim of fair use. That’s totally fine, but that is irrelevant here. We're on the Commons, which has its own rules and its own goals. If we want to bring age into this, I have worked on the Commons much longer than you have. We're not an image repository for journalists (as much as they are welcome to use our images); we exist to host freely-licensed images of educational value. Please review Commons:Fair use, which is our official policy that describes that we do not host images under fair use. ~Kevin Payravi (talk) 14:58, 15 July 2016 (UTC)
- Likewise, the reason I tagged your images as a copyright violation is that you placed them under a license that does allow for commercial use. ~Kevin Payravi (talk) 15:05, 15 July 2016 (UTC)
Yeah, well… By no standard was that image a copyright violation any more than a photo of the Citgo sign in Boston would be. But you probably know that.
A couple of years ago, I tried to be active here at Wikimedia Commons. I was chased away by abusive comments. It’s clear to me that there is a really awful culture in this organization that treats "newbies" with contempt and tries to maintain the control of a insular group of people who like the opportunity this site gives them to exercise a petty little bit of power and abuse people with impunity. So, you folks look for any kind of nitpicky reason to chase people out. You folks also keep this user-unfriendly so that you can dismiss anyone who doesn't figure out all the byzantine stuff involved with using it.
Two years ago, I apparently created the "wrong kind" of user page. And instead of just explaining that to me and helping me out, Wikimedia’s moderators heaped insults on me. In short, I really, really like what Wikimedia is trying to do. But a lot of the people doing it have the wrong motives and the wrong attitude for this work. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jdmdetroit1 (talk • contribs) 15:15, 15 July 2016 (UTC)
- @Jdmdetroit1: Again, I agree that the image would qualify for fair use for journalistic purposes. But that’s not our purpose here on the Commons; by uploading a copyrighted image under a free license, you do commit a copyright violation, as you cannot license the image on behalf of Nintendo.
- I understand the difficulty for new editors to try and get involved on Wikimedia Projects. The projects are complicated and have a countless list of rules and guidelines, and many new editors often do find themselves dealing with editors who aren't patient and/or willing to explain. And that’s a problem, because it drives editors away from the project and created a toxic atmosphere. Perhaps you think I fell under that category – maybe I did, or perhaps I didn't do an effective job of explaining the situation. But would you not say I attempted to offer you a fair explanation of the Commons’ rules, along with links to the relevant policies? My goal is to help you figure out all that byzantine stuff; it is up to you to review it and ask questions about it, rather than dismiss it based on my age or whatever lack of expertise in journalism you see. As hard as it may be to grasp Commons’ policy, it’s just as hard to explain it when a chief argument against my replies has to do with my age. I didn't try to chase you out or be nitpicky. The Commons has a responsibility of ensuring that images here fall into the project’s scope and don't violate copyright. You are absolutely more than welcome to edit and contribute to any Wikimedia project (and I'd encourage you to!), but that also requires the willingness to learn from other editors and review each project’s policies when required. ~Kevin Payravi (talk) 15:26, 15 July 2016 (UTC)
Kevin, I suggest you to colour the entire US map instead of merely Ohio state. --Saqib (talk) 17:47, 29 August 2016 (UTC)
- Hi @Saqib: The reason I originally colored only Ohio was because only Ohio was participating, and we did not want to confuse anyone by having them think the entire country was participating - but, we have since moved to hosting it nation-wide and I've updated the map accordingly :) Thanks! ~Kevin Payravi (talk) 17:40, 2 September 2016 (UTC)

Wiki Loves Monuments 2016 in the United States
[edit]Hi Kevin, I just found out about Wiki loves monuments, and I posted three pictures (I have more) of the Vietnam Veterans Monument in Albany, NY, that I took on my phone. They went to the default "Cultural heritage monuments in the United States." I would like to move the pictures to the existing category of "Monuments and Memorials in Albany, New York" and possibly x-posting in the existing category "Cultural heritage monuments in New York". Could you do this for me, and in the future is there a way for me to move and x-reference them myself? Also, under "Monuments and Memorials in Albany, New York" could there be a sub-category created titled Vietnam Veterans Monument? Again, in the future, would it be possible for me to create sub-categories myself if I think that would be the place for them? Florida
[edit]Hi Kevin, I just wanted to point out that "Florida" is unambiguous and does not need "(U.S. state)". So Category:Images from Wiki Loves Monuments 2016 in Florida (U.S. state) should be moved to Category:Images from Wiki Loves Monuments 2016 in Florida and the corresponding labs page should be updated to have Florida use the correct category. Also, I notice you've been updating the arg passed to {{Wiki Loves Monuments 2016}} to include the state; will this be corrected in the upload tool eventually? Must be tedious to do all that for every uploaded image (semi-)manually. -- King of ♥ ♦ ♣ ♠ 05:59, 12 September 2016 (UTC)
- Hi @King of Hearts: Good catch, thanks! I'll take care of the category. IIRC, I chose to disambiguate it for consistency reasons, due to Category:Cultural heritage monuments in Florida belonging to Uruguay - but I don't think I actually checked whether Category:Images from Wiki Loves Monuments 2016 in Florida was already in use. As for the template arguments, I'm working with the international team to come up with an alternate solution to my recent changes clogging sprees. Thank you! ~Kevin Payravi (talk) 18:57, 12 September 2016 (UTC)
- I believe that the U.S. state is widely accepted as the primary topic; c.f. Commons, English Wikipedia, and even the Spanish Wikipedia. So the Uruguay category ought to have parentheses while the U.S. state can stand alone at Category:Cultural heritage monuments in Florida. -- King of ♥ ♦ ♣ ♠ 23:21, 12 September 2016 (UTC)
- @King of Hearts: Great, thanks - I've fixed the "Images from..." category. Will take a look at the "Cultural heritage..." ones when I get the chance. Cheers, ~Kevin Payravi (talk) 05:40, 17 September 2016 (UTC)
Another issue - could you please remove Category:National Register of Historic Places from the categories automatically added to photos uploaded using http://tools.wmflabs.org/wlm-us/? Along with {{NRHP}} (which puts it in Category:National Register of Historic Places with known IDs) it's resulting in overcategorization, causing users to have to remove it. Thanks. -- King of ♥ ♦ ♣ ♠ 17:59, 18 September 2016 (UTC)
- @King of Hearts: Done and thanks; I'll have some time in the next few days to also help with cleanup. ~Kevin Payravi (talk) 18:07, 18 September 2016 (UTC)
Kevin, Nikikana, Addis, thank you for your effort in organizing this contest. It has provided some good images in the past. It has, however, also provided some embarrassments -- while the instructions on photographing copyrighted works on the subject page are good, the US rules have a variety of twists that are no always obvious and many newbies simply don't believe that, for example, the Korean War Veterans Memorial is under copyright.
Therefore, I suggest strongly that before you announce the winners, you have one or more experienced Commons Admins look over the ten images to ensure that they are all, in fact properly licensed. . Jim . . . . (Jameslwoodward) (talk to me) 13:36, 15 September 2016 (UTC)
- Hi @Jameslwoodward: Thanks for the great suggestion! I am (to the best of my self-diagnosing knowledge) familiar with our freedom of panorama laws and am slowly marking copyvios as they come in, but we can definitely get at least one pair of outside administrator eyes when it comes down to the finalists. Would you by chance be interested in being one of those pairs of eyes? ~Kevin Payravi (talk) 13:44, 15 September 2016 (UTC)
- Sure. BTW, I noted the comment from Drbones1950 above on the monument in Albany and have just put a DR on his images -- different sculptor from the monument in DC, but the same reasoning applies. See Commons:Deletion requests/File:Albany Vietnam Veteran Memorial.jpg. . Jim . . . . (Jameslwoodward) (talk to me) 14:07, 15 September 2016 (UTC)
- @Jameslwoodward: Great catch - and thanks! I'll be sure to reach out to you when the time comes. If you also know of any other administrators who are knowledgeable in the area, do feel free to recommend them. Thanks, ~Kevin Payravi (talk) 05:38, 17 September 2016 (UTC)

You have moved this category, but you haven't emptied it. This work can't be done by Bot, because this category depends on templates. Fix it, please. Wieralee (talk) 17:11, 20 September 2016 (UTC)
- Hi @Wieralee: Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the category is empty (see file's categories and what links here). I've assumed that the category is showing up as non-empty due to cache, so I've been waiting for the cache to update. Thanks, ~Kevin Payravi (talk) 17:40, 20 September 2016 (UTC)
- I see a File:Shrum Mound 1 70000490.jpg there... Wieralee (talk) 17:56, 20 September 2016 (UTC)
- @Wieralee: When categorizing through templates, sometimes changes to categories take some time to reflect. See this section for some more details. I'll take a closer look, but I'm almost positive that it's a caching issue that will resolve itself soon. ~Kevin Payravi (talk) 18:04, 20 September 2016 (UTC)
Posting the "Worlds Children Peace Monument" in WIKI LOVES MONUMENTS
[edit]Hi Kevin, I posted the Worlds Children Peace Monument located in Berea, Ohio in Wiki Loves Monuments. But I think I did something wrong because I have been informed that it will/was be deleted. This is a public monument and possible the only one promoted by the State of Ohio, Department of Tourism: http://www.ohio.org/destination/art-exhibitsexhibitions/worlds-children-peace-monument-wcpm I think it is important that it should be listed in Wikipedia because it is the anchor stone of the new coast-to-coast Great American Peace Trail.
As one Ohioan to another, can you help me fix this entry? Or maybe suggest someone who is familiar with Wikipedia rules and regulations to assist in this posting? This WCPM topic should not be deleted just because the people lack know how to do it correctly.
I know your time is important to you, but I would like to hear your opinion. Thank You, Renate Jakupca Kommunityingrid
(personal email: rjakupca@sbcglobal.net) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kommunityingrid (talk • contribs) 14:13, 21 September 2016 (UTC)
- Hi @Kommunityingrid: Sorry to hear about the troubles! I see two concerns regarding the images you uploaded:
- With files such as File:OHIO_Recognizes_The_ARK_in_Berea.jpg and File:Map of the ARK in Berea.jpg, it appears you're taking works that others have created and uploading them to the Commons. Since the Commons only accepts freely licensed media, you cannot take others' work and release it under a free license without permission.
- If you did take some of the photos (such as File:ARK in Berea Historical Marker.jpg), the issue here is that the photo is of a copyrighted work. Ohio Historical Markers that were erected in or after 1978 are copyrighted, so most photos of them cannot be released under a free license.
- Let me know if you have any questions or if I can help in any way. ~Kevin Payravi (talk) 18:07, 21 September 2016 (UTC)

Adding updated photos and information to Wikipeda
[edit]Kevin, I have discovered two entries for the monuments contest with great photos however, they are ten years old. In addition there is no actual data about these two items. I would like to submit both sets of photographs for each entry and the extra data. Can this been done and still win the contest?

- Hi Patricia! Regarding the dates of the photos: photos for the contest can be taken at any time, they just need to be uploaded to the Commons during the month of September.
- Could you provide a bit more detail on what you'd like to do? If you are interested in adding details to the existing entries, feel free to edit the file pages and add information! The photos (and their original uploaders) would be eligible for the contest.
- Otherwise, if you are interested in uploading your own photos featuring those particular sites, feel free to! We accept multiple photos of the same site. Thanks, ~Kevin Payravi (talk) 03:56, 28 September 2016 (UTC)

Identity confirmation
[edit]Kevin,
I have received your email about the copyright release of Washington_Monument_by_JDO.jpg a picture taken by myself and uploaded to the Wikimedia commons by myself.
I have sent an email generated by the OTRS. However it does not ask for ID or any form of identification. Should I send another email for that?
I do have an email account from my school, but it is not linked to my Wikimedia account. How can I use it to validate my identity?
Thanks,

to your userpage!Thank you for contributing to Wiki Loves Monuments 2016 in the United States during the month of October! The United States contest saw over 1,700 people contribute over 11,000 great photos of cultural and historic sites from all over the United States and its territories. In addition to National Register of Historic Places sites, we welcomed uploads of sites designated by state- and local-level historical institutions and societies. Hundreds of these photos are already being used to illustrate Wikipedia articles!
We're excited to announce that our national judging process has concluded, and that we have selected the winners of Wiki Loves Monuments 2016 in the United States! We were amazed by all of the uploads, and regret having to narrow it down to just 10. That being said – congratulations to our national winners and their amazing shots! Our 10 winners will be sent to the international Wiki Loves Monuments jury, who will then select the winners of the international contest. If you're interested in seeing the winners of the other various national contests as they are announced, you may do so at Wiki Loves Monuments 2016 winners.
Finally, we have also created a feedback form for all participants in the United States to fill out. The survey is optional and anonymous, and only takes a minute or two – we hope to use the feedback to organize better events in the future!
Once again, thank you for participating in Wiki Loves Monuments 2016, and we hope to see you again for future Commons photography events! ~Kevin Payravi (talk) 06:28, 2 November 2016 (UTC)

Wiki Loves Monuments Results
[edit]Mr. Payravi,
Hello I was surprised and very disappointed to see the 10th place winning photo of Mission San José y San Miguel de Aguayo in San Antonio. It is amazing that in all the photos you received, that a photo of this monument was in the top ten. I am thrilled about that!
File:Missions_of_San_Antonio_99.jpg|https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Missions_of_San_Antonio_99.jpg
I cannot find the photos I submitted online, but the photo I submitted of this mission was a far better photo than the one you chose. I would ask you to please look at my photo again and reconsider. I realize I am not a professional photographer but my photo is much better and I thought this was an amateur contest. I uploaded the files again.

Thank you for your attention. Steve Yount
- Hi @Sbyount: Thanks for reaching out to me! You can view all your past uploads here. In the future, you can access this page by clicking on the "Uploads" link at the top-right of any page while logged in. You may also select the "Contributions" link, which will take you to a list of all your previous uploads and edits.
- Regarding the results of Wiki Loves Monuments in the United States: You can see how our winners were selected at Commons:Wiki Loves Monuments 2016 in the United States/Winners. 11,000+ uploads went through three rounds of judging. The winners of each round were determined by panels of judges of various backgrounds (including artists, photographers, historians, etc). With 11,000 images to go through, this process was designed to be as fair as possible to all candidates, while bringing on-board diverse groups of judges with various backgrounds, perspectives, and preferences.
- Regarding changing the winner: The winners were selected back in 2016, and I've never heard of a contest that replaces winners after-the-fact due to preference. Please keep in mind that for a contest like this, choosing the winners isn't an objective determination. The results of the judging process is, naturally, left to the judges and their own judgement and perceptions. You uploaded a great photo, but there is nothing objective about it being "far better" than the winners. Everyone brings different backgrounds, perspective, and preferences to the table. Take my perspective, for example - you've taken a great photograph at an interesting angle, but having a bit of an eye for the technical aspects of a photograph, your photo's sky is washed out from the sun and has a strong shadow-and-light contrast. Some viewers may not notice or may even like it, thinking it adds to the artistic quality; others may not be a fan. I'm not trying to disparage your photograph, but am rather pointing out that what some people value in a photograph isn't what others value. Out of 11,000 submissions, many are exceptional, and one could argue that any number of them deserve a spot in the top-10 - but unfortunately not everyone can win.
- Let me know if there are any questions I can answer. I do regret that we can only select 10 winners for this contest, as so many of our contributors take their time to contribute great photos. At the very least, know that your contributions to the Commons are valued and have helped improve this free source of educational media - and I hope you consider participating in 2017. ~Kevin Payravi (talk) 06:02, 13 March 2017 (UTC)
Mission San José y San Miguel de Aguayo
[edit]Kevin, Thank you for you detailed comments. I realize the decision on the contest cannot be reversed and I am sorry I overreacted. I was just surprised to see a similar shot in the winners. My shot had much more content and color in it but I did not photoshop it so I admit the sky was a bit washed out. I will keep that in mind if I decide to submit any photos in the future. Thank you again for your kind reply. Steve
Your VFC installation method is deprecated
[edit]Hello Kevin Payravi, we are aware that using the old installation method of VFC (via common.js, which you are using) may not work reliably anymore and can break other scripts as well. A detailed explanation can be found here. Important: To prevent problems please remove the old VFC installation code from your common.js and instead enable the VFC gadget in your preferences. If you created this project page, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. |

- Hi @Satupe: These are great, thanks for sharing! A lot of these could be great for Wiki Loves Monuments, as well as Wikipedia articles. I was wondering - since I caught up with organizing the event, would you be interested in uploading your photos yourself? I personally love contributing images to the Commons, and I think you might too. I know you have your Google Site, but you could also use your userpage (User:Satupe) as a place to showcase your work.
- Note that the Wikimedia Commons requires images to be licensed under a free license, which allows anyone to use the work as long as its author is attributed. The most common license is CC BY-SA 4.0.
- Let me know if you'd be interested in contributing your photos in the next few weeks. If you don't want to upload yourself, let me know and I can try to upload them myself as well :) ~Kevin Payravi (talk) 05:09, 6 September 2017 (UTC)
Is Wiki profiting in any way from the photographs entered into the competitions?
[edit]Are you selling the high-resolution images to stock houses. Are you selling the images a stock images? Are you making the images available for other users to use? -William — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 2604:2000:8086:F600:81FD:19D8:9669:D4A6 (talk) 20:03, 4 September 2017 (UTC)
- @2604:2000:8086:F600:81FD:19D8:9669:D4A6: Hi William! When you upload photos to the Wikimedia Commons, you have to choose a free license to license your photo under. The most common/default option is CC BY-SA 4.0 which, put simply, let's anyone use the work for any purpose, as long as its author is attributed and any derivatives are licensed under the same license. So images aren't being sold...rather, the images are made available for free use. Like Wikipedia freely licenses its text for anyone to use, the Wikimedia Commons serves as a free repository of educational images for anyone to use. Let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks, ~Kevin Payravi (talk) 05:01, 6 September 2017 (UTC)
Images from Wiki Loves Monuments 2017 in Mississippi has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry. If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category. In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you! |

Thank You For The Ohio Info
[edit]Hello! Thank you for the help with Wiki Loves Monuments as well as the information on the Ohio Wikimedians User Group. I absolutely did join and hope to help out. I mainly take pictures but do make some Wikipedia edits to subjects I feel competent to edit in. I am not affiliated with OSU but would be willing to participate in an appropriate event if possible. I also appreciate the list of photos around OSU that need to be checked off and I am sure I can help, but is there a list of photos around Columbus that need to be done as well? I’m sure there are many but some kind of priority listing would be nice. Thank you again, Sixflashphoto (talk) 02:54, 7 September 2017 (UTC)
- @Sixflashphoto: Sorry for the late response! Glad you joined, and congrats on the recent promotions of some of your Columbus photos to quality status. Regarding a general list of Columbus photos that are needed, I'm not sure if something like that exists...but Columbus is relatively under-photographed I think, so lots to do! :) ~Kevin Payravi (talk) 05:47, 28 September 2017 (UTC)
- @Kevin Payravi: We're all busy so I entirely understand. Thank you for you for complementing my recent promotions. Lately I've been doing a lot of River, Parks, Monuments, Sites people would recognize, etc. But i'll give you an example. The Ohio Department of Education did not have any images at all yet alone one of their HQ. There are a lot of articles in the Metro Columbus (Gov. Ohio) that are of some significant important that do need pictures still and I am more then willing to help with my camera but don't have a real idea of what is most needed urgently. I wish such a list existed.
- In any case I will continue around the Metro Columbus ares. Right now I am on a kick of the Metro Parks, Local important monuments, Government and administration of Ohio pictures that should have been done ages ago, and the rives and watershed around Metro Columbus. But to be honest I tend to take pictures of what interests me and what I had plans to shoot that day I time to go out.
- Thank you again. All replies, regardless of timing are more then welcome, Sixflashphoto (talk) 06:16, 28 September 2017 (UTC)

[edit]So glad to see WLM is back - will look forward to participating! Good to see too that the upload image button now works too for the NYC Landmarks template. How/where were you or Richard looking/wanting the template to be implemented? ɱ (talk) 05:03, 8 September 2017 (UTC) Also btw, been considering the rules/prizes again; wondering if having a separate award bracket for non-DSLR/MILC photos would be of benefit; it might help encourage more people who aren't at the near-professional level... ɱ (talk) 05:19, 8 September 2017 (UTC)
- Hi @Ɱ: Nice to hear from you! Sorry for the late reply - I've actually been busy moving from Ohio to Texas, but I'm mostly settled in now.
- Re. the prizes, that is a neat idea...something we will definitely consider for next year, but not sure about this year since we're already underway. I'll think about it and talk to my co-organizer.

- Sounds good. And yeah wasn't thinking this year. Hope it wouldn't cause more trouble with too many and too many bad images, but even I don't think I stand the slightest chance at a prize against other DSLR shooters... ɱ (talk) 15:30, 11 September 2017 (UTC)

WLM 2017
[edit]I appreciate how hard this would have been with 8k+ photos, but many of the ones chosen aren't even QIs, so what standard was used? PumpkinSky talk 02:02, 14 November 2017 (UTC)
- Hi @PumpkinSky: Nice to hear from you. If you haven't seen it yet, a more detailed overview of the judging criteria given to judges is available here (I'll update the contest's main page to make this link clear). Photos were judged on quality (technical and artistic), as well as their encyclopedic value (i.e. how well the monument is already covered, as well as the educational value of what the image shows). For Round 2, the jury was provided the Featured Picture and Quality Image guidelines as a base to help evaluate photos as well. Overall, the criteria was a mix of technical quality, composition, and encyclopedic value.
- Factoring in whether or not an image has been rated as Quality or Featured into the judging is difficult, as I'd wager that there are many photos that might qualify as QIs, but many of these simply aren't nominated in time for judging, if ever.
- I know you uploaded a fantastic featured photo during WLM, which is awesome and appreciated. We will be distributing special WLM-US barnstars to users who contributed a featured or quality image to the event. We're also planning on setting up a gallery page featuring the featured and quality images uploaded during the event. It's not a monetary prize or top-ten recognition, but we hope it serves as some level of recognition for great contributions.
- If you can think of any improvements to the judging process (whether it's the criteria, judging recruitment ideas, etc.), would love to hear it. Likewise, any other improvements you can think of. Something I've thought of personally is sub-contests, such as monetary prizes for the most QIs/FPs, and/or other forms of recognition for QIs/FPs - so if you have thoughts on that as well, would love to hear them too. You can reply here; or, in the coming days we'll be sending out a message to all WLM-US uploaders with a link to a feedback form, which can also be used for feedback. Let me know if you have any questions or I can clarify anything else. ~Kevin Payravi (talk) 02:39, 14 November 2017 (UTC)
- You've got some good ideas there, like the barnstar thing. I'll see if I can think of more. I agree that all the top 10 are QI worthy but they're not all FP worthy. "encyclopedic value" is very nebulous. I might be mistaken but I think none of the FPs nom'd made the top 10. Something about that just strikes me as odd. All that being said, I wouldn't want to be a judge in something like this. PumpkinSky talk 02:52, 14 November 2017 (UTC)
- I did some thinking and put my suggestions into the event feedback form. Best wishes. PumpkinSky talk 16:39, 15 November 2017 (UTC)
- @PumpkinSky: Thanks! :) ~Kevin Payravi (talk) 20:21, 15 November 2017 (UTC)

to your userpage!Thank you for contributing to Wiki Loves Monuments 2017 in the United States during the month of October! The United States contest saw over 1,400 people (the most of any nation this year) contribute over 8,000 great photos of cultural and historic sites from all over the United States and its territories. Hundreds of these photos are already being used to illustrate pages on various Wikimedia projects.
We're excited to announce that our national judging process has concluded, and that we have selected the winners of Wiki Loves Monuments 2017 in the United States! These photos are recognized for their photographic quality, artistic merit, and their encyclopedic value as illustrations of unique historical sites. We were amazed by all of the uploads, and regret only being able to formally recognize the top 10. That being said – congratulations to our national winners and their amazing shots! Our 10 winners will be sent to the international Wiki Loves Monuments jury, who will then select the winners of the international contest. If you're interested in seeing the winners of the other national contests, you may do so at Wiki Loves Monuments 2017 winners.
If you would like to view all the photos submitted for the U.S. this year, you may do so here.
Finally, we have also created a feedback form for all U.S. participants to fill out. The survey is optional and anonymous, and only takes a minute or two – we hope to use the feedback to organize better events in the future!
A quick thank you to our national jury, as well as Commons editors who have helped categorize and place photos for the event. And finally, thank you for participating in Wiki Loves Monuments and helping to preserve our history through photography - we hope to see you again for future Commons photography events!

Time for WLE in the States
[edit]Hi Kevin, I was wondering whether next year is going to be the first time that the States will participate in the other "big" photo contest, Wiki Loves Earth. I can just tell you that after being 3 weeks in Alaska I just have so many amazing images that the States have surely a good chance to get great results. Many of those images are more wowing that e.g. the image with which I finished second last year worldwide. So, if you are considering launching WLE, you have one more reason now :) Best, --Poco2 14:59, 15 December 2017 (UTC)
- Hello? --Poco2 18:59, 13 February 2018 (UTC)
- Hi @Poco a poco: Sorry I never got back to you! I've been thinking about your suggestion. I'd love to see WLE-US happen (and to see more of your awesome pics!), but I also don't want to commit to WLE yet. Around the time of WLE I'll be busy wrapping up Wikipedia Asian Month, as well as preparing for WikiConference North America and WLM 2018.
- I'll keep thinking about it and will also try and see if there are other people in the US who would be willing to organize (or at least help organize). Thanks, ~Kevin Payravi (talk) 19:23, 13 February 2018 (UTC)

Extinct volcano
[edit]Dear Kevin,
Would an extinct volcano & old lava field in New Mexico be considered as a historical site, land mass or object?
Anthony F
- Hi Anthony! Can you give me the name of the volcano / lava field? It would need to be recognized as a historically significant site by an authoritive organization (historical society, etc.) to be accepted for Wiki Loves Monuments. Thanks, ~Kevin Payravi (talk) 01:59, 2 September 2018 (UTC)

Additional images to add from my submitted images
[edit]From njolds2@gmail.com: Hi Kevin~ Just earlier today, 9/26/2018, I entered the Wiki Media Contest with several of my images from a 2017 visit to Cades Cove in Townsend, TN, by the Great Smoky Mountains. This was an approved site on the National Register of Historic Places. I believe that I submitted my images correctly. They are confirmed sent, but I am not absolutely sure that it was for the current contest. However, can I add a few additional images to the group? Can I enter again for another historical site that is also on the NHRP list by state? Thank you in advance! Nancy J. General Question how to create Sub-categories
[edit]Hello Kevin - I have a couple of questions 1. Do I have permission to create Sub Categories; since I just uploaded a bunch of images for 'Alaska State Museum- (Juneau) and I would like to sort files within that selection; in particular create new Category "SLAM under Construction"
2. If I am allowed these privileges can you direct me to where I could get more information at to my limits and also some step by step guides "Wikimedia Commons for Dummies". Thanks Gillfoto 18:58, 10 October 2018 (UTC)

WLM categories per US state
[edit]Hi Kevin, In previous years I remember that you had to manually indicate the US state in the template, to have the WLM images of the US categorised by state. I think I know a way to make it cause to create less work, but the state still gets indicated in the category. I propose that I create an expandable menu in the upload wizard for the US, in what uploaders can indicate in which state the photo has been taken. If you agree with that, there are then two options:
- As the upload wizard makes it impossible to modify the contest template, it must be a separate template. With option one it is just an invisible template, just to temporarily contain the code for the US state which uploaders have indicated. Next, I can daily run a simple bot to move the code for US state to the WLM 2019 template and remove the temporary template.
- Another option is to do it like we do in Belgium with a national photo contest there. Also there we like to categorise by state and for that we use a template that stays on the file page permanently, and visible indicates in a box in which area it has been uploaded.
Can you let me know what you think? And which option you would prefer. If there are any questions, please let me know. Greetings - Romaine (talk) 04:20, 14 August 2019 (UTC)
- Hi @Romaine: Thank you for reaching out! Currently, we have users select their state using this tool, which adds
&categories=Images_from_Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2018_in_State
to the upload URL. I then use AWB to go through all the images to update the wlm-us template and remove the category. - I think Option 1 would be great - better to keep it simple and have just the one template. Having a bot do it so I don't have to would be awesome.
- Another consideration: We currently have Campaign:wlm-us-ca, which asks for a California Historic Places ID (hopefully in the future we'll have more for other states (: ). For the wlm-us campaign, if a user selects California as the state, would it be possible for the California Historic Places ID field to appear? This way we don't have to have separate campaigns for each state in the future.
- Thank you! ~Kevin Payravi (talk) 11:49, 17 August 2019 (UTC)

[edit]Kevin, Thank you for the notice regarding 'Wiki Loves Monuments', I happen to have had photographed a number of buildings in Jasper, Alberta this July; as I have already updated loaded them is there a way to tag them for inclusion to "Wiki Loves Monuments'or is it not possible? ThanksGillfoto 00:35, 3 September 2019 (UTC)
- Hi @Gillfoto: Nice to hear from you! Yes, you can go back and add any photos you uploaded in September to WLM Canada, as long as the place you photographed is on the Canadian Register of Historic Places (CRHP). What you need to do is the following:
- Add
{{Historic Places in Canada|####}}
to the image's description, replacing #### with the CRHP ID. - Add
{{Wiki Loves Monuments 2019|ca}}
below the license. - Add Category:Cultural heritage monuments in Alberta
- Add
- You can take a look at any of the existing uploads in Category:Images from Wiki Loves Monuments 2019 in Canada to see how it's done (e.g. https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:Billy_Bishop_House_(21).jpg&action=edit). I also I very sure it's moored in Juneau, the mountain and buildings are unique. Hope that's O.K. Gillfoto 04:01, 16 September 2019 (UTC)

[edit]I'm not sure what is going on. I submitted a monument image last year and all I know is that it didn't win. I know this because I viewed the winners, all highly (and artificially to my eye) over-saturated, indoor photos of colorful cathedrals and the like. Great if you're a medieval scholar or devotee. Otherwise my photo disappeared into a black hole. Without more information on the disposition of these images there is no real incentive to submit others. Further, I have no idea what will happen to the snippet I'm entering now. to your userpage!September 30th is the last day to upload photos for Wiki Loves Monuments! We're thrilled that the United States has almost reached 4,000 contributions so far this year. Of these images, ~370 (~9%) have already been used to help illustrate Wikipedia articles and pages on other wiki projects, which is fantastic.
If you've already made a photo contribution this year, thanks so much! If you have any last-minute photos of U.S. historical sites to upload and enter into the contest, today's the day to do it. Check out the United States event page for more information. Judging will take place throughout the month of October, after which the top-ten national finalists will be announced in early November.

Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks!
[edit]Hello,
Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at Wikimedia Commons.
I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org, so we can invite you in!
From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.
If you have any questions, please let us know at google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org.
Thank you!

[edit]Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,
I've got a quick update for you, containing three items:
- I’d like to invite you to our group’s second Virtual Meeting on Saturday, September 26, 2020. As last time, this meeting will serve as an opportunity to get to know each other better, share learnings, and connect in times of the global COVID-19 pandemic. - Also, I'd like to start a conversation about how we should be sharing responsibility for the user group going forward. I'd love to get some help when it comes to organizing things and I'm convinced that we can achieve more if a couple of people helped with coordinating stuff.
- Finally, the Wikimedia Foundation has asked me to spread the word about their latest survey: Universal Code of Conduct Survey. The goal is to create a safer environment on Wikimedia projects and the Foundation gathers feedback prior to coming up with a first draft.
Hope to see you at the Zoom meeting in September!

We've had an extensive discussion with Largely_Forgotten about the issue, they've very kindly reported the issue at Commons:Village pump/Technical and Commons:Upload Wizard feedback, but I've promised that I would report the issue to the US WLM organisers, so I'm posting to your talk page to do so. If you need an admin to help fix any of this, please don't hesitate to ping me. Nick (talk) 21:19, 3 October 2020 (UTC)
- Hi @Nick: apologies for the late reply (I did see your message when you first sent it and appreciate it). Been keeping an eye out for any more issues with the NRHP site, but fortunately haven't seen any. Hopefully we don't see any more downtime through the month. Thanks, ~Kevin Payravi (talk) 05:33, 13 October 2020 (UTC)
Formatting is OK now, thanks!
[edit]Hi Kevin, Nice to hear from you. Looks like everything OK, I've been busy with other duties; but today I'm back to uploading some 'Juneau Downtown Historic District' photos. Hope that you are in good spirits and health, take care. Gillfoto 02:16, 19 October 2020 (UTC)
Wiki Loves Monuments 2020 entries - Categories - "missing"
[edit]Good Morning.
My entries show a long list of Hidden Categories, including many "missing" designators. Did I inadvertently neglect to complete necessary steps when uploading? Will these impact my eligibility? In particular, "Images from Wiki Loves Monuments 2020 in the United States missing state categorization" is confusing -- I selected the appropriate states from the drop-down list when uploading.
Thank you very much for your assistance.

Wiki Loves Monuments in the United States 2020 – Last day to enter!
[edit]This user participated in Wiki Loves Monuments 2020. |
{{User Wiki Loves Monuments 2020}}
to your userpage!Hi there! Kevin from Wiki Loves Monuments in the United States here. I know it's been a tough year for everyone, and I hope this message finds you well.
You are receiving this message as a participant in last year's Wiki Loves Monuments 2019 in the United States. First, a recap: We concluded with over 5,200 great photos of U.S. historical sites made possible by contributors like you. If you haven't yet seen, last year's U.S. winners are viewable here, and the international winners here (including multiple from the United States!).
Second, as you may have seen from the banner notices on Wikipedia, this year's Wiki Loves Monuments 2020 in the United States has been running through October instead of September in consideration of the pandemic and the hectic start of the fall season. Despite the challenges of the year, we're thrilled that the United States has surpassed 5,000 photo contributions so far.
October 31st is the last day to upload photos for the U.S. competition this year. If you've already contributed, thank you so much - and it's great to have you again this year! If you haven't yet contributed but are interested in participating again, you're invited to join us during these last couple days. Check out the United States event page for more information. Remember that you are welcome to upload and submit photos of historic sites that you've taken any time in the past, not just this month.
As always, thank you for participating in Wiki Loves Monuments! If you'd like to respond to this message directly, please do so on on my talk page. ~Kevin Payravi (talk) 07:20, 30 October 2020 (UTC)
Thank you for participating in Wiki Loves Monuments 2020! Please help with this survey
[edit]Dear Kevin Payravi,
Thank you for contributing to Wiki Loves Monuments 2020, and for sharing your pictures with the whole world! We would like to ask again for a few minutes of your time. Thanks to the participation of people like you, the contest gathered more than 200K+ pictures of cultural heritage objects from more than 50 countries around the world.
You can find all your pictures in your upload log, and are of course very welcome to keep uploading images and help develop Wikimedia Commons, even though you will not be able to win more prizes (just yet). To make future contests even more successful than this year, we would like to invite you to share your experiences with us in a short survey.
Please fill in this short survey, and help us learn what you liked and didn't like about Wiki Loves Monuments 2020.
Kind regards,
the Wiki Loves Monuments team, 08:27, 14 November 2020 (UTC)

Next Commons Photographers meeting featuring large format photographer Ben Horne
[edit]Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,
I'm happy to invite you to our next virtual meeting on Saturday, March 20, at the usual time. As I mentioned during our last get-together, I'd like to invite external guests every now and then, given that it seems good to expand our view and learn something from someone outside our community.
Our first external guest, Ben Horne, will talk about large format wilderness photography, followed by a question-and-answer session. Ben is maybe one of best known contemporary large format photographers in the United States. On his excursions to national parks, he shoots 8×10 film and talks about his adventures on his YouTube channel which has attracted more than 48,000 followers so far. He is YouTube's first, and longest active landscape photography vlogger and I'm thrilled that he has agreed to join our next meeting and talk about his experiences.
If you're interested in joining this meeting, please sign up on the page below:
Also, don't forget to post your question(s) prior to the meeting on the following page in order to ensure a good and fruitful question-and-answer session:
I'm very much looking forward to this event and I hope you'll be able to join.
All the best, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 21:38, 15 February 2021 (UTC)
Reminder: Commons Photographers meeting tomorrow
[edit]Just a quick reminder: the meeting with large format-photographer Ben Horne will happen tomorrow, Saturday, March 20. If you haven't done yet, please consider signing up for the event and add your questions to this page. This will be our first virtual meeting in 2021 and I'd be super happy if you could join. All the best, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 16:38, 19 March 2021 (UTC)
Re mass deletion requests
[edit]Hello,
Since you did not respond to my response to your post on my talk page, I withdrew my requests for deletion. I do not know how to perform a batch deletion for a bot that has uploaded millions of images.. But my requests still show up on the list and I do not know how to fix that. I will never request deletion of images again. In the past, I was able to do request batch deletions for images by those who uploaded relatively few images. Sorry for all the inconvenience I have caused. Best wishes, Krok6kola (talk) 12:46, 2 May 2021 (UTC)
- p.s. Although the images in question were uploaded by User:DPLA bot, its contribution history only goes up to April 15, 2021, they show up in "Media needing categories as of 30 April 2021". For "Media needing categories as of 1 May 2021" there are 36,726 images, making these categories virtually impossible for editors like me to deal with. No one has dealt with the 17,942 remaining in 30 April yet. For early today, there are already 19,690 uploads needing categories. What happens on my computers is that with so many images, mostly they fail to load. I do not know how to accomplish what you suggest. Sorry I made things worse. Krok6kola (talk) 13:07, 2 May 2021 (UTC)
Wiki Loves Monuments in the United States 2021
[edit]Hello! Last year you contributed to Wiki Loves Monuments 2020 in the United States. Thanks to people like you, it was a great success with over 1,000 people contributing almost 6,000 photos of cultural and historic sites from all over the country. Hundreds of these photos now help illustrate Wikipedia articles, improving our open knowledge about United States history, culture, and heritage. If you haven't seen the winners yet, be sure to check them out here.
I'm pleased to say that we're back this year with Wiki Loves Monuments 2021 in the United States through the month of October, and I'd like to welcome you to participate once again in the event. Check out our updated event page for more information.
Once again, thank you for participating in Wiki Loves Monuments 2020, and we hope to see you again in this year's event! If you'd like to respond to this message directly, please do so on on my talk page. ~Kevin Payravi (talk) 21:19, 11 October 2021 (UTC)
Response to WLM-US invite

Response to WLM-US invite
[edit]Thank you Kevin for the invitation to submit photos for the 2021 photo contest. Can you tell me where the photos are that I submitted last year. When I go to the Masonic Temple in Winona, MN I don't see them on that page. — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 207.138.194.157 (talk) 11:51, 12 October 2021 (UTC)
- Hi there! If you remember the username you used when you uploaded your photos, I'll be able to more easily help you out. Not all photos uploaded end up being used on Wikipedia, but they are still valuable to have on Commons for use on other Wikimedia projects as well as by the public. ~Kevin Payravi (talk) 05:55, 22 October 2021 (UTC)
Hotel Des Artists
[edit]Hello Kevin,
I participated in the the "Wikipedia loves monuments" last year, with a photo of the Soldier's and Sailor's monument in Riverside Park NYC.
Looking at the map of the places in NYC from the "Wiki Loves Monuments" map,
I noted the "red" pins meaning the photos for those sites that were considered insufficient or outdated.
I noticed a red pin for the Hotel Des Artists at 1 West 67th Street, NYC. What caught my eye was: From the Wikipedia article:
"The building is also noted for its pastoral floor-to-ceiling paintings by Howard Chandler Christy, one of its earliest residents."
There are a number of his works attached to the article, but no pictures of the " pastoral floor to ceiling" paintings that Mr. Christy did.
I was thinking that being able attach those to/in the article would be helpful and informative.
What I wished you ask you about is, could there be a letter of introduction that I might give to the management of the building confirming that I would be there to take the photos of the Christy paintings? It could help gaining access to the paintings, rather than my approaching them as an unknown person.
Also noticed that "Sunnyside Gardens" in Queens NY has a red pin. This is a neighborhood, so a number of pictures would need to be taken to give an adequate representation. A general letter "To whom it may concern" that I might show to building management, of which there are several, could also be helpful, as many of the "gardens" are surrounded by buildings and only residents are allowed in. Being able to go into them and take pictures from that vantage point, would I think give people a good idea about what makes the neighborhood unique. I appreciate Wikipedia and would like to help to get the red dots, green.
Thanks for any advice about these.
Best, Daniel Hicks danielhawkhicks@gmail.com

If you're interested in providing input, please engage in the discussion on the talk page of the draft.

Question from the CPUG Board
[edit]Dear user group member,
I'm writing you to today on behalf of the board of the Commons Photographers User Group. The past year has been a busy one for us. In 2022, we've had more activities than ever before in the history of our group and you'll find an overview on our group's page.
With that being said, 2022 was also a year of learning for the current board members. Most of us hadn't been involved in running the Photographers User Group and we spent quite some time on getting used to our new roles. We all feel it was a steep learning curve.
That's why, at our last board meeting, we decided to ask our members whether they'd be ok with us serving for another year. Extending our board duties to the end of 2023 would allow us to continue the work we've started this year, and to benefit from the knowledge we've built over the past twelve months.
However, in the end, it's up to you and the other members of our group to decide whether such an extension of our board term should be granted. I invite you to voice your opinion on this page:
Commons:Commons Photographers User Group/Board Elections 2022
We'll gather feedback until December 27, and we'll keep you in the loop about the outcomes of this process.
Thanks so much for your ongoing support of our group. I wish you, your family, and your friends all the best.
--Ailura (talk) 12:32, 11 December 2022 (UTC)
Most memorable shot 2022 / Wikimania 2023
[edit]Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,
I wish you a Happy New Year! As it has been our tradition at the beginning of the new year for a while, we're sharing our most memorable shots of the past year with each other. I invite you to share a picture that is particular meaningful to you and to describe why that's the case. Also, as Wikimania 2023 will be here before we know it (August 16 to 19), please consider adding your thoughts on our planning page, where we gather ideas for how we can make Commons photography more visible than in the years before.
All the best to you, your family, and friends! --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 21:01, 2 January 2023 (UTC)

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2022 voting is open!
[edit]Read this message in your language
Dear Wikimedian,
You are receiving this message because we noticed that you voted in Round 1 of the 2022 Picture of the Year contest, but not yet in the second round. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2022) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
In this second and final round, you may vote for a maximum of three images. The image with the most votes will become the Picture of the Year 2022.
Round 2 will end at UTC.
Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Wiki Loves Monuments 2023
[edit]I have signed up the United States for this event. If you would like to get together on this, as I see you created the home page for US. Ktkvtsh (talk) 09:12, 26 August 2023 (UTC)
- @Ktkvtsh: Ah yes, thanks for doing that! As we've done in prior years, I've updated our competition to run during October, as that's generally been a better time for our organizers (and it happens to be particularly true for me right now as I've come down with Covid). Here is our grant for this year, which provides funding for prizes, certificates, shirts, and a few other line items. Since I'm the grantee, I've also listed myself as the point-of-contact.
- It'd be great to work with you on the event! Leading up to the event, our main tasks will be setting up the event page (which will likely be an adaptaion from 2021's contest), updating our guides for finding monuments, and getting ready to promote the event (including social media and seeing if we can get external partners like historic societies to promote). I'll also be looking at ways to improve our upload portal. During the event, the biggest tasks are continuing to promote the event, answering participant questions, and keeping an eye on uploads and filtering out copyvios, incorrect entries, signage, etc. After the upload period is of course the judging process, which we typically have a coordinator for. I'll be checking with our past coordinators (Laura and Stephanie) to see if they'd be interested in doing it this year, but we may need to find a new one. For the juries themselves, we usually get a lot of past jury members interested in participating again, but we try to bring in new faces as well.
- Please let me know if you'd be interested in any particular area of organizing, it'll be great to have more people on-board. Thank you! ~Kevin Payravi (talk) 09:29, 26 August 2023 (UTC)
- @Kevin Payravi Hope you start to feel better soon. I will work on the page design as I am fairly new to beign a Wikipedia Editor. So I will copy the 2021 page and update it for 2023 and see what I can do to make it better.
- I can promote on the Facebook page as well. I would love to do anything that needs to be done!

Wiki Loves Monuments in the United States 2023
[edit]Hello! In 2021, you contributed to Wiki Loves Monuments in the United States. Thanks to people like you, it was a great success with over 500 people contributing over 5,500 photos of cultural and historic sites from all over the country. Hundreds of these photos now help illustrate Wikipedia articles, improving our open knowledge about United States history, culture, and heritage. You can see the top-ten winners of the US competition here.
While the United States did not participate in Wiki Loves Monuments in 2022, I'm pleased to say that we're back for 2023 through the month of October! I'd like to welcome you to participate once again in the event. Check out our 2023 event page for more information.
Once again, thank you for participating in Wiki Loves Monuments 2021, and we hope to see you again in this year's event! If you have any questions, please leave them on the event talk page.
Thanks, ~Kevin Payravi (talk) 09:13, 13 October 2023 (UTC)

Flickypedia soft launch and a huge thank you
[edit]Dear fellow Commons photographer,
I hope this message finds you well. As you might already know, the Flickr Foundation has been busy creating a new Flickr-to-Commons bridge (“Flickypedia”) this year. After a successful demo at the GLAM Wiki Conference in Montevideo, the Flickr Foundation team is now inviting all members of the Commons Photographers User Group to be the first to review their alpha, reporting any technical issues or other feedback via the Flickypedia project talk page.
At the same time, this message is an opportunity for me to thank you for your trust and support over the past couple of years. Since 2017, we've grown into being one of the largest user groups in the Wikimedia universe. I've tremendously enjoyed interacting with all of our members when it came to joint photowalks at Wikimanias, virtual Zoom meetings where we covered a wide variety of photography topics, as well as our annual “Most memorable shot of the year”, among many other events. As I'm not running for an official position in our current board election, this will be my last message on behalf of the user group to you. Thanks for all the happy moments we shared together over the years! I hope you'll continue creating free images for the millions of people we serve through Wikipedia and Commons.
All the best, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 19:36, 9 December 2023 (UTC)
Deadline Approaching for Most Memorable Shot Submission!
[edit]Hello Kevin Payravi !,
Just a quick reminder that the deadline for submitting your most memorable shot of 2023 is swiftly approaching! As tradition holds, since 2018, we've been sharing our favorite captures from the past year with each other. This year marks the sixth iteration of our beloved "Most Memorable Shot" tradition, and we're excited to see what everyone has to share.
Whether you're a member of the Commons Photographers User Group or not, you're warmly invited to participate. Your unique perspective adds to the richness of our community, and we'd love to see the world through your lens.
So, if you haven't already, take a moment to pick out your most cherished picture of 2023 and share it with us on the designated page. The deadline is February 29th, so don't let time slip away!
Let's keep this wonderful tradition alive and celebrate the beauty and diversity of our collective experiences through photography.
Looking forward to seeing your memorable shots!
Best regards,
Suyash Dwivedi (talk) 17:45, 24 February 2024 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:WikiPortraits - SXSW 2024 Report.pdf. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |

Welcome, Dear Filemover!
[edit]
Hi Kevin Payravi, you're now a filemover. When moving files please respect the following advice:
- Use the CommonsDelinker link in the {{Rename}} template to order a bot to replace all ocurrences of the old title with the new one. Or, if there was no rename-request, please use the Move & Replace-tab.
- Please leave a redirect behind unless you have a valid reason not to do so. Other projects, including those using InstantCommons, might be using the file even though they don't show up in the global usage. Deleting the redirects would break their file references. Please see this section of the file rename guideline for more information.
- Please know and follow the file rename guidelines.
