Flickr reviews stacking up

Tech News: 2019-03

Recent changes

  • You can now use Google Translate in the content translation tool. [1][2]
  • You can now add captions to files on Commons. Captions are short descriptions of the file. They can be translated to all languages we use. They can't use wikitext markup.
  • Earlier a quoted HTML attribute had to be followed by a space. Now it doesn't. This means that some pages could look different when you save them even if you didn't edit that part of the text. [3][4]
  • Advanced item Templates with <templatestyles> could not show the difference between the live template and the sandbox version when they were tested. This has now been fixed. <templatestyles> has a new wrapper parameter now. You can use it for selectors like .mw-parser-output <wrapper parameter value> <selector from CSS page>. [5]

Problems

  • When you see an edit in the recent changes feed or in the history of a page some of them have tags. Some tags are added automatically. You can also add tags manually. Tags for edits that have been added manually can be edited. This didn't work for a little while. This has now been fixed. [6]

Changes later this week

  • You can move files from your wiki to Wikimedia Commons and keep the file history with the new FileExporter. It will be a beta feature on all wikis from 16 January. If you want to test it you activate it and check your wiki's configuration file.
  • Users who could cause more damage to the wikis if someone took over their account have to have more secure passwords. This includes administrators and other user groups. They can't use passwords that are in a list of common passwords. Accounts with common passwords are easy to take over. The list of common passwords was made longer a few weeks ago and has a different error message. Some user groups have been added to those who can't use common passwords. This is to protect all accounts with user rights that could cause damage. [7]
  • Advanced item The AbuseFilter variable minor_edit has been removed. It was deprecated in 2016. Now you can't use it. You can fix the filters using it. You can find them if you use the search bar on Special:AbuseFilter.
  • Recurrent item The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from January 15 17:54, 14 January 2019 (UTC)

Autopatrolled users will get Flickr import with UL

Thanks for notifying. I think making UW tag {{Flickreview}} makes more sense than letting the bot handle {{FlickrVerifiedByUploadWizard}}, given that there are currently tens of thousands of files tagged with the latter and it doesn't make much sense to re-process them. --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 15:12, 17 January 2019 (UTC)
I think the Phabricatorians are planning to give Commons a hard time regarding this. The bot presumably finds files to be reviewed by checking Category:Flickr review needed, right? - Alexis Jazz ping plz 18:48, 17 January 2019 (UTC)
There are only 65,762 files that use {{FlickrVerifiedByUploadWizard}}. I'd say let the bot process them. Most files will probably pass without issues, which is good, because they were never checked with a server side solution. Some will be caught because the Flickr user is on the bad-authors list, which UploadWizard never checked for. That'll be good, actually, those files need to be examined anyway. Some will not be found on Flickr, for those files {{FlickrVerifiedByUploadWizard}} should be changed to {{FlickrVerifiedByUploadWizard-deprecated}} (which for now could just be a redirect to {{FlickrVerifiedByUploadWizard}}). When the run completes, we'll have no more files with FlickrVerifiedByUploadWizard and FlickreviewR can start processing new uploads with the template. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 18:59, 17 January 2019 (UTC)
UW does check against bad authors list since phab:T44307.
I still do not think the bot should re-check {{FlickrVerifiedByUploadWizard}}. If UW wants the bot to perform a re-check, use {{Flickreview}} instead.
And 65,762 (yes, tens of thousands) files is a lot. The bot reviews about one image every two seconds, so that would be 1.5 days of downtime just to process these files. --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 19:14, 17 January 2019 (UTC)

2. The patch may not be desirable for MediaWiki in general. I don't know how it could be applied specifically to Commons.
You're right about the blacklist. I must be confused with something else. Just blindly replacing {{FlickrVerifiedByUploadWizard}} with {{FlickrVerifiedByUploadWizard-deprecated}} is something I could do even with VFC. I am unaware of any third party sites that utilizes UW's upload from flickr's functionality, but yes that does not rule out their possible existence. If you feel like this template deprecation is really the best way to go (which I don't), I can make the bot review these tags iff {{FlickrVerifiedByUploadWizard}} redirects to {{Flickreview}}. --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 19:41, 17 January 2019 (UTC)

Thanks! Now that I think about it: mw.FlickrChecker.js considers all Commons-incompatible licenses (noncommercial etc) as "invalid". This makes no sense for third party sites, so the file was already tailored to Commons. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 07:47, 18 January 2019 (UTC)

@Jdx: I'm getting other weird issues in the logs, like ValueError: time data '2015-04-30T17:53:47Z' does not match format '%Y%m%d%H%M%S' (why would the timestamp be from 4 years ago, and in a wrong format). Actually not so much. Files with embedded archives happen once–twice a month. Recently I have been used the bot mostly for cleaning photos taken with Android, usually Samsung, phones, i.e. the bot has been tagging such files and I cleaned them manually using jpegtran. It reduces their size about 50–75%. Such files happen 2–3 times a day. --jdx Re: 18:15, 18 January 2019 (UTC)

  • Some people did not get last week's issue of Tech News. This was because of a problem with MassMessage. If you did not get last week's issue, you can read it on Meta. [8]

Recent changes

  • The content translation tool can now use version 2 as the default version for users who turned on the beta feature. For example it adds the tracking category Pages with unreviewed translations to translations that might have used machine translations without fixing the problems. This is so others can find them. You can find this category in Special:TrackingCategories on Wikipedias.
  • https://mediawiki2latex-large.wmflabs.org can now convert collects of up to 800 pages to PDF, EPUB or ODT. Previously this was 200 pages.

Problems

  • When a template was edited with the visual editor, it would sometimes put all information on one line. This makes it difficult to read for editors who use the wikitext editor. It also makes it more difficult to see what happened in a diff. This problem affected edits made between 8 and 17 January and is now fixed. [9]
  • MassMessage is used to post a message to many pages. It has not been working reliably. Some messages have not been posted to everyone. [10][11]
  • Because of a database problem that had to be fixed immediately you could not edit most wikis for a couple of minutes on 17 January (UTC). This has now been fixed. [12]

Nice work! I'm seeing the results in my feed, and making some fixes. Here's one case the bot should watch for: when a file has been cropped/extracted from another file that's on Commons.   • When someone moves a page to a name that already exists that page that had the name the article is moved to is deleted. For a couple of months this didn't always work. Some users saw an error message instead. This has now been fixed. [15]

No. You should not add {{Flickreview}} if it's derived from a file on Commons. Also, use internal links for sources in that case. --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 17:36, 10 February 2019 (UTC)
Thank you. I must be ignorant, I don't understand. I followed a "wizard" and don't know what a {{Flickreview}} is. I entered the URL of the original on Commons, should I have started with "File" instead of the whole "http.." link?
Sorry to be a pain. I had an actual glitch a while ago, I had to go somewhere with code geeks. I'm not sure if I need that again, probably just my process? I clicked the wrong thing?

@Sammy D III: please use COM:Croptool (best in "lossless mode") to avoid future issues. Croptool will take care of everything for you. @Sammy D III: Very good. Some advice: most crops are best uploaded as a new file. For a minor crop you could use the overwrite option. COM:Overwrite has some guidelines on this, but when in doubt, upload as a new file. File:DF7G-5036 20111004.jpg for example is better uploaded as a new file.
