Changes later this week
The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 5 December. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 6 December. It will be on all wikis from 7 December (calendar).
Very old versions of the Opera Web browser are no longer supported. This means that technical development will not be tested to make sure it works with those Opera versions. Use Opera 15 or above or another browser if you have problems. [4]
Almost 170 wikis with no high-priority errors in Linter categories will switch to use the Remex parsing library. This is to replace Tidy. A few larger wikis such as German and Italian Wikipedia will also make this switch. It will happen on 5 December. Other wikis will be recommended to switch soon when they have fixed the errors that must be fixed. Tidy will be removed in the middle of 2018. [5][6]

Embedded Data Bot reuploads images with embedded thumbnails
The Embedded Data Bot reuploads images that contain an embedded thumbnail. I'm not sure this is the intended behavior, as the thumbnail is not encrypted/hidden information but standard en:Exif data (jpg file with ifd1 tag) which is generated by the vast majority of cameras. Note that the size difference is much larger than the 11053 bytes as claimed by the EXIF. (If I remember correctly Revent (or someone else) tested whether the bot removed thumbnails in EXIF; it did not.) The bot do not use jpegtran, but alters the file in binary directly with a less aggressive algorithm than jpegtran (it keeps the "good part of original binary data unaltered, but jpegtran will optimize it), but jpegtran gives a good approximation (jpegtran on this file for me gives 8822079 bytes, the bot gives 8956416 bytes). However, I'm not familiar with exiftool to know what your command does or how to make exiftool truncate the file.
Also, it's not required for you to strip the file of its embedded thumbnail. Te bot exists as an anti-abuse machanism and it's the bot's duty, not yours, to keep files "clean". (Well, if you really want then sure, but you aren't going to get into any trouble if you don't). @Trougnouf: To state it clear: if you really want to remove redundant data from your JPEGs, just use jpegtran -copy all -optimize -outfile new.jpg orig.jpg. I use it for every JPEG marked but not processed by the bot, e.g. File:Ljósmyndun.jpg. --jdxRe:08:20, 7 December 2017 (UTC)

A new tag marks edits where a redirect was created or removed. This still works when the editor writes something else in the edit summary. You can see the tags for example in the recent changes feed, article history, user contributions or on your watchlist. [9]
If you use Chrome on Android, you can now use the print to PDF button to create a PDF of an article. [10]
Filter by number of edits or filter by time range have been grouped on a same menu on the recent changes page if you use the new filters. The "View new changes since $1" link is now more prominent. [11]
Some of the web fonts that were provided by the Universal Language Selector extension are being removed. This is to reduce the load time on pages. The web fonts were added many years ago to help users read text in scripts which did not have fonts or had broken fonts. This is not the case any more. You can check the status page for a list of all web fonts and whether they are currently being used and especially for special requirements. [12]

Research
Research findings from interviews and surveys of GLAM project participants are being published to the research page. Check back over the next few weeks as additional details (notes, quotes, charts, blog posts, and slide decks) will be added to or linked from that page.
The team has started working on designs for changes to the upload wizard (T182019).
We started preliminary work to prototype changes for file info pages.
Work on the MediaInfo extension is ongoing (T176012).
The team is continuing its work on baseline metrics on Commons, in order to be able to measure the effectiveness of structured data on Commons. (T174519)
Upcoming: in the first half of 2018, the first prototypes and design sketches for file pages, the UploadWizard, and for search will be published for discussion and feedback!
The project is a celebration of the visual diversity of Africa on Wikipedia and its sister projects. There are several fun ways you can help us to make the impact of Wiki Loves Africa stronger:
Add more categories to your images so that people will find them to use them in articles ... you can see how to do this here: Quick Guide to Categories on Commons
Add your image to a relevant Wikipedia article, i.e. if your image shows a tailor sewing, then add the image to an article on Sewing or Tailors - this allows readers to see different global perspectives of a universal subject. You can see how to do this here: How to insert images into Wikipedia using WikiText
Improve the images description to make them easier to understand and reuse.
If there is no article that reflects the subject of your images, then start an article about that subject. If you are a new editor, you can see how to do that here: Creating your first article
Add more images - you can add more images or media that reflect interesting and encyclopedic subjects in your immediate community.

If you have ample time, can you please check all of the files by en:Useer:Patrickroque01 that I transferred from enwiki, with your Embedded Data Bot? I have noticed that upon downloading some of his files to my cellphone, they won't get downloaded (which lets me to realized that they have embedded data). Embedded data (concatenation) targeted by the bot should have no relation with not being able to download. In any case, please link to a list of the files you want it to check, but it's highly likely that they have already been checked. --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 02:00, 9 December 2017 (UTC)
The following are some of the concerned photo files (that I cannot download which led my suspicion of having "embedded data", though unsure):
It's not my intention to speedily delete nor request deletion these files (which I transferred to here from enwiki, and I thick Patrick Roque won't allow such deletions). But I want to have these files checked and if there is such "data", be made them "Commons-safe" as soon as possible (e.g. truncation or replacing with same but w/o embedded data file). And if it is possible, I desire that my uploads and transfers from enwiki be automatically checked by your bot by way of flagging or tagging me (my account). Thanks! The first one contains a jpeg embedded thumbnail at position 3879424 bytes (3.7 MiB), and such embedded thumbnail is neither explicitly acceptable nor unacceptable. And no, the bot exists for an anti-abuse purpose, not I-want-to-keep-my-files-clean purpose. (Well, embedded thumbnails are usually not abusive, but the bot cannot tell for certain, though abuse usually comes form newbies.) If you really insist you may use jpegtran to "clean" them, but that is not the primary purpose of the bot and manually blacklisting certain users (it uses a certain threshold of uploader's edit count to determine whether to check their files) require extra effort that I do not intend to do. (In the case of abuse, as in the primary purpose of the bot, blocking the abuser is so much easier than blacklisting.) --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 18:41, 15 December 2017 (UTC)

Problems
When you import a page from another wiki the usernames of the users who edited the article on the wiki you imported it from are shown in the article history. This should link to the users on the original wiki. A script to fix this caused problems for Wikidata and German Wikipedia. It also created a large number of SUL accounts on wikis where editors had never edited. [13]
Some bot owners got email about their bots logging in from a new computer. If this is from one or a couple of wikis, you can turn these messages off in your preferences on those wikis until the problem has been solved. If not, you can report more about the problem in Phabricator.

Future changes
Files on Commons will have structured metadata in the future. The developers are now looking for examples of different kinds of metadata to make sure they are aware of them when they build prototypes for structured data on Commons. You can read more and help by giving examples of interesting media files.
The Structured Commons team are making sure Commons work with structured data. If you regularly contribute to Commons and Wikidata you can answer a survey that helps the team prioritise the tools that are important for the Commons and Wikidata communities. The survey ends on 22 December. You can read more on Commons. You can also help the team decide on better names for "captions" and "descriptions". This ends on 3 January 2018.
We are specifically contacting you for your ideas because you are one of the top users of the blocking tool on Commons. We think that your comments will help us make better improvements. You can post to the discussion in the language that you are most comfortable expressing your ideas.
